Title: Recent developments in Metallenes: 2D analogue of Graphene

Abstract:

The discovery of graphene and its ensuing influence on energy prompted scientists to investigate and develop more two-dimensional (2D) materials, with current studies concentrating on xenes, metal-xenes, and metallenes. Metallenes are the newest of the three classes of 2D materials. They are made up of a single atomic layer of metal and are structured and electronically different from other 2D materials and bulk metals. In addition, they possess high conductivity and a high surface area of metallic active sites suitable for catalytic, electronic, optoelectronic and energy related applications. This literature review examines various approaches for synthesizing metallenes, along with the unique chemistry involved in their syntheses, as well as their characterization and applications. Emphasis was placed on the techniques and strategies utilized to alter the facets, metallic composition, porosity, defects, and crystallinity of the resultant nanosheets. Recent advancements in the application of metallenes in the energy sector, focusing on batteries, solar cells, and electrocatalytic processes, such as CO2/N2/O2 reduction reactions and hydrogen/oxygen evolution reactions. The synthesis, characterization, and applications present both challenges and opportunities for future research.
