Title: Altering Cell Wall Phenolic Acids to Improve Biomass for Biorefining

Abstract: Biomass from terrestrial plants, largely lignocellulosic cell walls, can be converted into fuels and chemicals to reduce fossil fuel dependence. Grasses incorporate phenolic acids onto their lignin and polysaccharides which can modulate interactions among cell wall components and biorefining efficiency. Altering expression of members of a group of grass-diverged CoA-acyl acyltransferases alters esterification of either the polysaccharide arabinoxylan or the polyphenolic lignin. I will discuss how these enzymes can be used to improve grass and dicot biomass quality, insight gained into the structure and composition of cell walls, and remaining questions about the biological and chemical functions of wall phenolic esterification.
