Energy Systems Innovation Center and Advanced Grid Institute presents “Overview of Transmission Line Protection” by Matt Horvath, PE, Power Engineers, Inc.

OVERVIEW
This presentation will provide a basic understanding of traditional overhead transmission line protection concepts, methods and schemes. Predominantly used protective elements will be explored and elementary communication-based protection schemes introduced. Shared emphasis on how each protective method or scheme operates as well as basic application will be provided. Various challenges faced by traditional protective functions based upon increased penetration of renewable sources on the grid will be introduced as well as mitigation methods to compensate.

BIO
Matt Horvath, P.E. joined POWER Engineers Inc. (POWER) in 2011. He is a member of the SCADA and Analytical Services (SAS) group where he performs a variety of electrical studies for transmission, distribution and generation projects. He has a background in protective relaying, power system analysis, arc flash studies, NERC reliability standards and grounding grid analysis. Matt holds a B.S. in electrical engineering from Washington State University and is a registered professional engineering in Washington, Oregon and Texas.
