Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP) at WSU

APPLICATION

INTERESTED IN ATTENDING CUWIP

Deadline closed.

Any undergraduate student with an interest in physics may apply to attend a Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP).  For the last fourteen years,  CUWiP has helped undergraduate women thrive in physics by providing them a with a unique opportunity to engage with and learn from other women in physics at all stages of their physics careers. At CUWiP, budding physicists will experience a professional conference, learn about graduate school, learn about academic and non-academic professions in physics, and share invaluable experiences, advice, and ideas with other women. Undergraduate students (18 years and over) are eligible to apply and register for the conference. We encourage graduate students, postdocs or interested faculty to register via our internal application.

Applications open September 3, 2019

STEP 1: APPLICATION

While the conference targets undergraduate women and underrepresented minorities passionate about physics and astronomy, anyone seriously interested in attending CUWiP may apply.

Applications open September 3, 2019 and must be submitted by the deadline of October 7, 2019. It is very important to complete all parts of the application and to write a thoughtful Applicant Statement. In case conferences are oversubscribed, priority will be given to applicants who:

  • Are undergraduate physics or astrophysics major
  • Are from a community college and plan/intend to transfer to a Physics program
  • Have never attended an APS CUWiP

We are excited to invite undergraduate students to apply to attend CUWiP at Washington State University in January 2020.  In order to maximize the number of CUWiP participants we can accommodate, APS will allocate participants to sites based on travel logistics and site capacity. We will aim to follow the distributions outlined below, but may have to make adjustments. Please do not purchase travel or plan to be at a specific site until you receive an email confirming you have been accepted to a specific CUWiP site.

Application and registration are different! Those who are accepted to attend their regional CUWiP will receive an invitation to register for the conference in their acceptance email. The application is free, and the deadline is October 7, 2019, 9 pm PST.

STEP 2: REGISTRATION

You will receive an email from APS Physics in early November regarding the status of your application.  Deadline for registration is November 14, 2019.

After you have been accepted, you then register with the conference to which you have been accepted to confirm that you will actually be attending. You may be assigned to a different CUWiP conference than the map indicates above depending on the number of applications received for that region.

Students who are accepted to attend the conference must pay a one-time registration fee of $45, which helps offset some of the cost of the conference, including all lodging and meals. If you cannot afford the registration fee and your department/college is unable to help, you may request a fee waiver if you are accepted to attend (before you register) by submitting a statement attesting to your financial need and verifying that department or university funds are not available. Further details will be provided when you are invited to register for the conference.

Lodging on Friday and Saturday night (for non-local students) and food will be covered by the conference.  We expect that your travel expenses will be covered by your home department or college. However, if they are not able to cover these expenses, travel funding is available. To be reimbursed for travel, you must contact us before booking any travel arrangements. For details please visit the Travel Reimbursement  section of this website.
