The Brelsford WSU Visitor Center is extending its business hours for today’s home Cougar football game against the University of California.

WSU will host over 250 employers, organizations, and graduate programs at this Fall’s expo. We encourage students, faculty, and staff to attend this bi-annual networking event.

Throughout the world, two major societal issues requiring profound attention are (i) the development of clean and efficient energy storing devices and (ii) access to appropriate healthcare. The synergistic relationship between the need for accessible diagnostics and clean energy stem from the recent recognition and importance of ‘Global Health’. Electrochemistry, which plays an important role in a variety of scientific pursuits, is heavily relied upon in the fields of diagnostics and sustainable energy and is thus well-suited to make significant contributions to Global Health.

The building enclosure provides an environmental separation between the interior and exterior spaces and controls the transfer of heat, air, and moisture between these two unique environments.

Heat pump technology is changing the way single-family residences are being heated and cooled. Heating systems that are reliant on gas or electric resistance heating can be changed to a heat pump and meaningfully reduce carbon emissions. While most heat pumps can be used in residential retrofits and new residential construction in Washington State climate zones, the cold weather limitations of heat pumps may need to be considered in some building locations to ensure the unit installed can meet optimal heating temperatures during cold winter months. In this lecture, key takeaways from a cold climate heat pump study performed by RDH Building Science Inc. for Fortis BC Inc. will be discussed.

The optical properties of lanthanide ions can be used to determine temperature. We have used two different approaches: (1) Eu3+’s ability to probe its local environment and (2) 2-color fluorescence (Dy3+ and Sm3+) to determine temperature under extreme conditions. I will describe three research projects that have used these approaches to measure temperature in detonation environments and in composites under dynamic compression.

Ab initio molecular dynamics simulation technique is a promising tool to study various properties of vibrational spectra, X-ray spectra, free energy, entropy, etc. even at high temperatures. With the harmonic phonon model, all interatomic forces are treated as purely harmonic so that the equilibrium distance between atoms is independent of temperature.

The DeYonker laboratory uses quantum chemistry to study two very different types of problems. First, we are developing software to automate, simplify, standardize, and validate the construction of atomic-level enzyme models. Enzyme simulations are notoriously challenging as their large size prevents modeling the whole enzyme with highly accurate but computationally expensive quantum mechanical (QM) methods. Determining which biological sub-units necessarily should be included in the QM-model remains ambiguous, and current practices for model construction typically suffer from human bias and unclear methodology.

Biography: Dr. Jean-Sabin McEwen is an Associate Professor in the Voiland School of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering at Washington State University, and is a Staff Scientist at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. He received his BS degree in Physics from McGill University, as well as his MS and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from Dalhousie University. Dr. McEwen won the NSF Career award in 2017 and was also named an influential early-career researcher by the American Chemical Society’s Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research in 2018. He serves as the Secretary of the Pacific Coast Catalysis Society, and was President from 2019-2022. He also was previously a member for the Early Career Advisory Board of ACS Catalysis. Dr. McEwen currently has 104 peer-reviewed publications with over 4000 citations.
